Project Overview

The Ford Package E project, a joint venture between B&T Steel and RSB Projects, included the design and construction of a new press plant, high-speed press line, and body shop. The project marks a significant milestone for the automotive industry in South Africa.

The building covers an area of about 10,000 square meters and uses approximately 1,800 tonnes of steel. B&T Steel was responsible for the crane building in the new facility. The extensive use of steel in the project is what makes it stand out. The building is quite substantial at its peak, with a PSI of 60, and it has four overhead cranes with a capacity of 60 tonnes each.

Project Details
To accommodate the limited supply of specific steel sections required, some redesigning had to be done. The team from B&T Steel and RSB contracts worked closely with structural engineers to redesign certain elements to still be structurally sound but make use of the limited sections South Africa’s steel suppliers could provide after Covid-19 disruptions. Despite the challenges, the project was completed ahead of schedule, a testament to the collaborative and hardworking nature of the team.
Benefits of Steel in this Application

The finished product showcases the use of steel in innovative ways, demonstrating the material's versatility and strength in large scale industrial projects.
